Early Injuries Proving Lethal To Seattle Mariners

The Mariners have been struck with a little injury bug early in the season with RHP Steve Cishek, LHP Drew Smyly, and SS Jean Segura all on the DL. Jean Segura and Steve Cishek are both in rehab right now, and hopefully, will be joining the club soon.

Steve Cishek has been missed in the bullpen in the early part of the season. The Mariners bullpen has been struggling lately and needs improvement. The sinkerballer is looking to come back and have an impact right away.

He has not been the same pitcher as he was with the Marlins in 2013 and 2014 when he had a combined 73 saves while only giving up 6 home runs. He has been struggling with a hip problem since last year and finally got surgery this offseason.

LHP Drew Smyly is on the 60 Day DL with an elbow injury. The newly acquired lefty has not pitched a regular season game in a Mariners uniform. The back end of the rotation has been struggling lately with Miranda not having a quality start yet this year.

On April 5, Drew Smyly underwent a PRP injection in his elbow and his return is much anticipated. There is no timetable for his return but expect him to be back around the all-star break.

SS Jean Segura suffered a hamstring injury against the Angels on April 8th but SS Taylor Motter has filled in well. Jean Segura was acquired from the Diamondbacks this offseason and is an upgrade from last year’s shortstop, Ketel Marte.

Jean Segura made his first rehab appearance at AA Arkansas and should be returning to the majors soon. The big question with his return is what will happen with rookie SS Taylor Motter, who has been productive at the plate so far this season.

The Mariners need these guys to come back and healthy if they want to be competitive in the AL west this year. The Mariners travel to Detroit for a three-game series following this weekend series against the Oakland Athletics.
