The Seattle Mariners first month of the season has come to a close and there are many things to look forward to with many months left to go. With a record of 11-15, placing them fourth in the AL west, it could be a slow start, but they are 6-3 at home while going 5-12 on the road.
MVP: Nelson Cruz
The Boomstick himself had a slow start but has been scorching hot at the plate the past 2 weeks. Cruz is the middle of the lineup presence that makes pitchers tremble in fear of giving up the signature 430+ bomb to Nelson. With 7 home runs and 23 RBIS, he has brought the lumber that the Mariners have struggled with lately.
Cy Young: James Paxton
James Paxton has been everything the Mariners have looked for this season. With King Felix on the 10-day DL, James has filled in as the ace of the staff. He is top 5 in ERA with 1.39 and only gave up 5 runs to the Oakland Athletics. The big lefty looks to continue his dominance as the season continues.
ROY: Mitch Haniger
Mitch Haniger was the forgotten player in the Taijuan Walker and Jean Segura trade. Currently, on the 10-day DL, Mitch was the spark in the Mariners offense when the big three of Cano, Cruz, and Seager struggled early in the season. Losing him early this season early this season really hurt the Mariners offense.
NEWLY ACQUIRED: Jean Segura
Even though he was injured early this season, Jean has been a big factor in the Mariners success this season. The shortstop is a major upgrade from last season’s shortstop, Ketel Marte, who was traded to Arizona this offseason. Hitting in the leadoff spot and playing stellar defense he has been a major addition to the Mariners lineup.
The Mariners open the month of May with a series against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, who are in 2nd place in the AL West with a record of 14-13. James Paxton takes the mound, looking for a big first game win.
