Revenge is a dish best served cold, to the tune of 3 goals in 9 minutes, to be exact.
The day in Atlanta began wet, and ended in an absolute maelstrom. Atlanta United is red-hot, and they aren’t even at full strength. Another sold-out match at Bobby Dodd Stadium meant another chance for the absolutely wild Atlanta United supporters a chance to cheer on the 5 Stripes. Most would think this new team would have worn off for a city like Atlanta, but it would seem soccer is here to stay in Atlanta. Supporters came for a show, and boy they get one each time out on the pitch.
Both teams created 9 shots, with both having 3 on goal. The only difference, Atlanta converted those 3 on goal, with 2 from Almiron, and a goal and assist from Tito Villalba. Jack Harrison scored the lone goal for NYCFC.
The new boys on the block aren’t afraid to throw the kitchen sink, and that’s exactly what they did today. Ever since Josef Martinez went down, Atlanta has had a difficult time scoring until the past two matches. Martinez, who did not make his return today, now has another week to recover for the 5 Stripes trip up to Vancouver to play the Whitecaps.
Atlanta (5-4-3), are now on a 2-match win streak, with a difficult June coming their way. A road trip to Vancouver, then an away match to the red-hot Chicago Fire, followed by Columbus at home, D.C. on the road, and then they close-out June with the Rapids coming to town.
Man of the Match
“The baby-faced assassin” himself, Miguel Almiron is the man of the match, notching 2 goals, in his second straight multi goal game. Watch out, Gunnar Solskjær.
