Rudy Gay has declined his player-option with the Sacramento Kings, which means that he is now an unrestricted free agent.
Due to an Achilles injury, Gay only played 30 games this season. In those 30 games, he averaged 18.7 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Gay is currently 30-years-old and he will be 31 when next season starts. That is usually the age where NBA players start to decline. The Achilles injury might also have a negative impact on Rudy Gay’s abilities.
Rudy Gay, however, can still be a reliable scoring option in the NBA. He is also a decent player on the defensive end as well. There are many teams that will be looking for a good wing player like Gay during free agency. Let’s look at some of these teams.
The Heat desperately need a scoring wing if they want to make the playoffs next season. Their top target in free agency is currently Gordon Hayward, who is also being targeted by the Boston Celtics. Rudy Gay is a good option for the Heat if Hayward stays in Utah or goes to Boston. Gay is also reportedly interested in joining the Miami Heat.
Bringing Rudy Gay to Oklahoma City can help take some weight off Russell Westbrook’s shoulders. The Thunder need another reliable scoring option if they want to be a contender in the West. Victor Oladipo has the potential of being a good scoring option, but at the moment, he’s far too inconsistent.
3. Utah Jazz
Keeping Gordon Hayward is currently the top priority for the Utah Jazz. If Hayward does leave for another team, then the Jazz should go after Rudy Gay. Although Gay is nowhere near as good as Hayward, he can still be good enough help the Jazz make it to the playoffs next season.
LeBron James and the Cavaliers will be looking for more good players and play makers this summer if they lose to the Warriors. Rudy Gay can give the Cavaliers a good option off the bench and provide scoring when LeBron is off the court. This signing would make the Cavs even better and it would put Gay in a winning environment. This deal could happen if Gay is willing to take a pay cut and a reduced role in order to be in a winning environment.
Rudy Gay can still be a good two-way player in the NBA. There will undoubtedly be many team chasing his signature this summer.
