The Boston Celtics have been in serious talks with the Philadelphia 76ers to try and move the #1 pick to Philly. The 76ers have reportedly been waiting on medical information on Markelle Fultz, but the trade talks have become very serious.
The 76ers own the #3 pick in this years’ draft along with the Lakers 2018 first round pick and Sacramento’s 2019 first round pick. In those years, the 76ers own their own picks as well, so they have a lot to offer Boston.
The Celtics have already been reported to have said that if they draft Fultz they would most likely move him in a deal to acquire a player like Jimmy Butler or Paul George.
While the #3 pick is a lot less appealing to NBA general managers, the #3 pick along with Brooklyn and Los Angeles’s 2018 first round pick would definitely intrigue them more than just the #1 pick and Brooklyn’s pick alone.
Talks with the 76ers have went so far that the planned visit of Fultz to Boston tomorrow morning may now be moved to Philadelphia instead.
A trade between the two would consist of only draft picks and no players, so don’t get your hopes up on Dario Saric being included in the deal, Celtics fans.
The 76ers best point guard on the roster is T.J. McConnell, so it’s not that surprising that they want to try and improve at that position.
A core four of Markelle Fultz, Ben Simmons, Dario Saric, and Joel Embiid is an extremely scary future.
Even if they end up trading the #3 pick, the Lakers’ 2018 first rounder and the Kings’ 2019 first rounder for the #1 pick, they still own their own picks in 2018 and 2019.
The 76ers are looking like they’re going to be a future dynasty, with or without Fultz.
If the Celtics end up going through with this trade and do not trade for Jimmy Butler or Paul George, they can also draft Kansas SF Josh Jackson, who they have thought about taking with the #1 pick. Either way, they Celtics would not be getting cheated out of this deal.
The Lakers have also inquired Danny Ainge about the #1 pick, for Magic Johnson has reportedly “fallen in love” with Markelle Fultz and wants to move up one spot to grab him at #1.
As said already, the 76ers own the Lakers 2018 first round draft selection, so Magic would most likely have to include a young prospect in a deal instead of just draft picks.
With an immediate need at the power forward position, the Celtics may ask for the #2 pick and Julius Randle from the Lakers.
Los Angeles already has two young guards in D’Angelo Russell and Jordan Clarkson, so if they do end up trading for the #1 pick and drafting Markelle Fultz, expect one of those two players to be moved relatively soon.
These next few days are going to be very interesting.
