Manchester City have already announced two signings; Bernardo Silva, the Portuguese attacker for £43 million, and Ederson Moraes, the Brazilian goalkeeper for £34.7m. These two signings are supposed to be the first of many in the Manchester City revamp under manager Pep Guardiola.
Today it was originally reported by Mundo Deportivo that Dani Alves has been in talks with Manchester City. The former Barcelona Star and current Juventus defender has been drawn to the idea of playing for his former manager, Pep Guardiola.
One of the biggest weaknesses last year for Manchester City was at the Fullback position. This is a big reason why they have been linked with many fullbacks including Ryan Bertrand, Alex Grimaldo, Benjamin Mendy, Kyle Walker, and other Juve defender Alex Sandro. Talks with Monaco about Mendy and Tottenham about Walker have stalled in the past few days. This helps the citizens prioritize Alves over the rest.
34 year old Dani Alves is the oldest of the group, so you would believe Alves isn’t the long term answer at the position. However, there are many benefits to signing Alves.
- He is still a class player: Alves played extraordinarily at Juventus this season. He had 33 Appearances, 6 goals, 6 assists, 8 yellow cards, and a pass completion percentage of 86.1%. That goal/assist record matches Kelechi Iheanacho. [WhoScored]
- He has great experience at the position: Alves helped anchor a rock solid Juventus back line that got them all the way to the Champions League Final and win the Serie A title this year. Alves has immense experience in his decorated career. He has 33 club championships, including three Champions league titles. Alves also has exactly 100 appearances for Brazil and would be a fantastic mentor for young players in the Manchester City locker room. Players like Pablo Maffeo would benefit greatly from this signing.
- Alves is the perfect fullback for Pep’s system: Guardiola has been known for getting his fullbacks involved in almost everything. He likes them out wide, and more importantly, involved in building up attacks. Alves does just that. In all of the Serie A season this year, Dani Alves had the best cross accuracy (38%) among players who attempted 50+ crosses [whoscored].
- Alves is also very cheap: It was reported by The Guardian that it would take just £5m to secure Alves. Compared to other players who have been linked with City at the same position, it is an understatement that he is great value for money. For example, players like Kyle Walker have a hefty price tag of £60m.
Dani Alves would be a great signing for Manchester City. He would be an amazing addition on top of Silva and Moraes. Alves would be just the third signing with a reported six to eight signings for the Blues. City fans buckle up; it should be a fun summer ahead!
