The Las Vegas Golden Knights have some big decisions to make in the upcoming expansion draft. They must build their roster with 14 forwards, 9 defencemen and 3 goalies by choosing unprotected players from each team. These are the best players from the Western Conference who the Golden Knights can take.
Chicago Blackhawks: Trevor Van Riemsdyk, Defenceman- Trevor is a good, young, low cost defenceman who can be a decent attacking threat.
Colorado Avalanche: Mikhail Grigorenko, Center- Grigorenko is a big, physical center. He can lay out hits and pick up a few goals as well.
Dallas Stars: Dan Hamhuis Defenceman- Hamhuis is a reliable, veteran blue-liner. He has great knowledge of the game and knows where to be at all times.
Minnesota Wild: Matt Dumba, Defenceman- Dumba is a solid defence man who posseses great attacking ability. He is arguably the best defenceman that the Golden Knights can select.
Nashville Predators: James Neal, Wing- Neal played a huge part in Nashville’s run to the cup final. He picked up 41 points in 70 games this season. He can add goals on the board for any team.
Saint Louis Blues: Nail Yakupov, Right Wing- Yakupov may go down as the biggest 1st overall flop ever. But at the beginning of his career Yakupov wasn’t a flop, recording lots of points in his first year or two with the Oilers. The Golden Knights may want to take one last chance with him and hope that he possibly returns to the star he once was.
Winnipeg Jets: Micheal Hutchinson, Goalie- The Golden Knights must pick 3 goalies and Hutchinson could be their 3rd choice goaltender. He is young and won’t add much to the cap, plus he has shown promise as a backup in Winnipeg. For a third-choice goalie, Hutchinson would be a steal.
Anaheim Ducks: Sami Vatanen, Defenceman- Vatanen has always been a solid blue-liner for the Ducks. Sami does everything that a solid defenceman should do. Vatanen is one of the best players left unprotected and Vegas has to pick him up.
Arizona Coyotes: Radim Vrbata, Right Wing- This guy has to be the most under-rated player in the NHL. He did wonders for the Canucks and recorded 55 points this season. He would be a great attacking option for Vegas.
Calgary Flames: Matt Bartkowski, Defensceman- The Flames aren’t filled with lots of talent to choose from. Bartkowski is a average blue-liner who won’t add much to the cap. If they must pick from Calgary, he is probably the best choice.
Edmonton Oilers: Iiro Pakarinen, Wing- Pakarinen hasn’t shown much in his NHL career so far. Althought he is only 25 and still has some decent potential to bring along the wing.
Los Angeles Kings: Dustin Brown, Right Wing- Brown is known as a leader, and a physical player, who all around is very talented. These are all aspects that could help the Golden Knights.
San Jose Sharks: Mikkel Boedker, Wing- Boeker is an agile winger, who can score a few goals here and there. He has elite skating ability which can beneift any team in numerous ways.
Vancouver Canucks: Brendan Gaunce, Center- From what Gaunce has shown so far on the ice he looking like a promising young talent. He won’t add much to the cap and could turn into a great center later on.
