Confederations Cup Preview: Mexico vs Germany

Joe Maiorana – USA TODAY Sports

There is an exciting game upcoming in the Confederations Cup. CONCACAF giants Mexico are taking on the defending World Cup champions, Germany.

Mexico came second in group A, after beating both New Zealand and Russia 2-1 and drawing with Portugal 2-2. Mexico were tied for points with Portugal in the standings of group A, but came second due to goal differential.

Germany came first in Group B, after beating Australia 3-2 and beating Cameroon 3-1, while drawing 1-1 with Chile. Since Chile were only able to manage a 1-1 draw with Australia, Germany ended up topping the group with 7 points.

Germany and Mexico will face each other this Thursday, June 29th, for a chance to play in the Confederations Cup final. The game will be held at Fisht Olympic Stadium in Sochi, Russia and will start at 7:00 pm British Time, 11 AM Pacific Time, or 2 PM Eastern Time.

While at a glance this game might look like a comfortable win for Germany, there has been a huge concern over Germany’s lineup choice for the Confederations Cup. Germany have left any player of quality at home and brought a squad of young players who have bright futures, but just aren’t superstars yet. The squad Germany still brought some quality talent like Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Antonio Rudiger, Emre Can, Joshua Kimmich, Timo Werner and Julian Draxler, among others.

Germany’s young talents have shown they can be quick and create chances in front of goal. However, they have also been quite shaky at the back, making mistakes that more experienced defenders would not make.

Mexico’s team is strong all around with not really any weak spots. They have a solid backline, goalkeeper, and midfield as well as an attack with the likes of Chicharito and Carlos Vela.

In order for Germany to win, they will need to use their quickness to create chances in front of goal, while making sure their defense stays together and doesn’t make any mental mistakes. In order for Mexico to win the game, they need to co-operate in all areas of the pitch, while capitalizing on the young German’s inexperience, especially at the back.

My prediction: I think overall, Mexico have the better team. Germany’s young forwards will get a goal, but their inexperienced defense will cost them as they will concede multiple goals times.

Prediction: Mexico 2 – Germany 1.
