Free Agency is starting very soon, and the Philadelphia 76ers have already had a busy offseason. The Sixers traded for the No. 1 pick and drafted star guard Markelle Fultz out of Washington. Free Agency is one of the most exciting times of the NBA offseason, and it can reshape the whole league. This year some of the biggest free agents are Steph Curry, Gordon Hayward and Kyle Lowry. While Curry is expected to stay with the Warriors, the other two stars might be switching teams. The Sixers probably won’t be interested in some of the bigger free agents, but they should be plenty busy. Here are three players that the 76ers should definitely target.
JJ Redick (Unrestricted)
2016-17 Per-Game Stats: 15.0 points, 2.2 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 0.7 steals, 0.2 blocks
As JJ Redick continues to age, his skills will decrease. He has become a sub-average defender and isn’t a strong rebounder either. But, he will always be a sharpshooter. Redick did not shoot as well this year as in years past, as he shot 42.9% from three this past season. That placed him 5th best in the NBA. Redick had the 10th most three-point field goals made this past season.
Redick would fit right into the Sixers young core as a veteran presence. The Sixers already ready have two ball handlers in Fultz and Ben SImmons. The only thing that they are missing is a lockdown shooter. That is what Redick can bring to them. He can guard smaller players and receive passes from Ben Simmons. This scenario is a dream fit for both sides, and I expect it to happen.
Andre Iguodala (Unrestricted)
2016-17 Per-Game Stats: 7.6 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 1.0 steal, 0.5 blocks
Iguodala played the first 8 years off his career in Philadelphia. If he were to come back to Philly, he would be a great veteran presence off the bench. Iguodala is a great all-around player that was a key part of the Golden State Warriors championship this season. During his first stunt in Philadelphia, he averaged 15.3 points per game, and 5.3 rebounds.
Iguodala has a chance to become a great mentor for all of the Sixers young players. Iguodala can provide the 76ers with a great defensive player, who can cover the other team’s best player and let the scorers focus on scoring. Iguodala can do anything that this young 76ers team needs him to do. If he comes back to Philly, he will provide them with a lot off the bench.
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (Restricted)
2016-17 Per-Game Stats: 13.8 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.2 steals, 0.2 blocks
Even though the SIxers should pursue Caldwell-Pope, it might be difficult because he is a restricted free agent. So no matter what the SIxers offer him, the Pistons can still match it. Caldwell-Pope isn’t a star yet, but he has so much potential that he is worth taking the risk of a close to max deal. Caldwell-Pope has the motivation, but he just needs to put it all together to become a star.
Caldwell-Pope would continue to grow, should he play in the Sixers young core. Last season he was one of the best young perimeter defenders in the league. His strong three-point shot could make up for the weak shooting of 76ers star Ben Simmons. Caldwell-Pope would fit right in, to all the young and talented 76ers trying to improve.
