After winning the 2017 Copa Centroamericana, Honduras have made their 13th appearance in the Gold Cup. Los Catrachos are in a slump right now, having a record of 0-3-2 in their last 5 games including 6-0 rout from the United States. Currently, Honduras are 5th place in the CONCACAF qualifying table and will not qualify if it ended today.

In preparation for the tournament, Honduras manager Jorge Luis Pinto came out with a squad of old veterans and new, young guns in order to compete. The biggest name left out the squad is Sporting Kansas City’s Roger Espinoza.

The 30-year-old midfielder will miss the tournament due to injury. Espinoza will be very missed in the squad, as he is very experienced with the national team and is rock solid in the midfield.

Looking at their squad, Honduras’ biggest strength is up front. Olimpia’s Anthony Lozano is a proven goalscorer in both club and country and will be a major threat to other teams. The 24-year-old will most likely be the main target for goals in the Gold Cup.

Don’t forget about the duo of Romell Quioto and Alberth Elis from Houston Dynamo. Both are great on the wings and are very dangerous on the counter attack. Get them going on offense and defenses will be shivering in fear. Also, due to Honduras playing two out of their three games in Houston, it is guaranteed there will be many Honduras fans cheering on for the Dynamo duo including actual Dynamo fans.

Honduras’ biggest weakness is their defense. They’ve allowed the most goals in CONCACAF qualifying with 14 and the worst goal difference with -8.

Captain Maynor Figueroa is the heart and soul of the team as he is most known for playing with Wigan Athletic and Hull City in the Premier League. The 34-year-old brings in solid play at left back and leadership as we made over 100 appearances for Honduras.

Prediction: In Group A, Honduras will face Canada, French Guiana, and Costa Rica. Honduras will easily beat French Guiana 3-0, lose to Costa Rica 2-0 and tie with Canada 1-1. They will finish in 3rd place and move onto the knockout stages due to being one of the two best 3rd place teams. Sadly for Honduras fans, they will lose in the quarterfinals.
