The former Chelsea star, John Terry, has signed a 1-year deal with Second Tier side Aston Villa. Terry likely made the decision based on the fact that Aston Villa will not play Chelsea, due to them being in the lower league.
Terry will reportedly make £60,000 a week with a £4,000,000 bonus if he helps the club to a promotion to the Premier League. The deal was confirmed when club owner Dr. Tony Xia tweeted “Welcome JT to Birmingham City…Aston Villa!
The Chelsea legend, when asked about the bigger money and bigger playing stage from Premier League clubs, said “I thank them for their offers, for me it was the mental side of playing against Chelsea was too much to get over. After 22 years at a football club, it’s easy to understand why.
John Terry is ready to lead Villa, as he said “I wish Chelsea well and will be watching out but my thoughts are 100 percent here and the ambition is to get us back to the Premier League.” Aston Villa finished thirteenth out of the 24 clubs in the EFL Championship. It would be a big turnaround to get Villa to first, second, or even the top six, to get promoted to the Premier League.
Terry has been Chelsea’s most successful captain to date, with 15 titles to his name. It will be interesting to see if Terry captains Aston Villa this season, I would personally be surprised if he did. He is a born leader and he’s proven himself at Chelsea, but seeing that he’ll only be at the club for a matter of months, he wouldn’t be a good choice to be given the armband.
The deal is great for everyone involved. Terry will be able to play for another year which Chelsea supporters will love, and the rest of us will sit back waiting for news on his possible future as a manager.
