The Denver Broncos stay searching for a QB of the future after Peyton Manning retired and Brock Osweiler left Denver for a mega deal with the Houston Texans. With training camp on the way, there will be tons of position battles. Denver currently has 3 QBs that could start for the team. Let’s take a look at them:
- Trevor Siemian
- Paxton Lynch
- Chad Kelly.
Trevor Siemian. Siemian was drafted with the 250th pick and was the 7th and final QB taken in the draft. He made only 1 appearance during the 2015 season, that was to kneel down to close out the first half against the Pittsburgh Steelers. After being named the Broncos starting QB for the 2016 season, Siemian totaled 3,401 passing yards, 18 TDs, and 10 INTs in 14 games last season, good enough to get an invitation to the Pro Bowl, but declined due to an injury.
Paxton Lynch. Lynch started 2 games last season in place of Siemian due to an injury. In those 2 games, Lynch totaled 497 yards, 2 TDs, and 1 INT. Lynch has shown signs off improvement so far this off-season and has had a great Minicamp and OTAs. The Broncos went out and hired coaches and signed players that best fit Lynch this off-season. I think it’s safe to say that the coaches are trying to build this team around Lynch.
The following is from BleacherReport
“He just wasn’t ready coming out of college, especially for that offense. He needs to be in the gun and clear to see the field. Can’t be under center running that [Gary] Kubiak scheme,” said one scout who viewed Lynch in college and has watched his rookie film
Chad Kelly. Chad Kelly is the wildcard to start for the Broncos organization. After missing some of the 2016 season due to a torn ACL and lateral meniscus, Kelly totaled 2,758 yards, 19 TDs, and 8 INTs, while also totaling 332 rushing yards and 5 TDs for Ole Miss; good enough for the Broncos to select him with the last pick in the draft (Mr. Irrelevant). Kelly’s HOF uncle, Jim Kelly had some advice for his nephew. He told him to “Shut your mouth and be the first person in the building, and the last to leave.” Ex-NFL QB Brady Quinn thinks Kelly can be a starter for the team:
“I think Chad Kelly can be a starter in the league,” Quinn said on The Blitz on SiriusXM NFL Radio. “People talk about QB Deshaun Watson at Clemson and how well he performed against Nick Saban’s very talented Alabama defenses, in particular in the last two years. Look at Chad Kelly. I mean, Chad Kelly was a guy who I think gave Nick Saban some fits sometimes preparing for him because he can make all the throws, he’s athletic enough to hurt you with his feet when he needs to.”
Prediction: All three quarterbacks will compete throughout the preseason for the starting job but Paxton Lynch starts for the Broncos during the 2017 season.
