Just like the Chicago Cubs, the Washington Nationals went out and traded for their biggest need well before the deadline.The Nationals traded for relief pitchers Ryan Madson and Sean Doolittle. The Oakland Athletics in return received relief pitcher Blake Treinen, left handed pitching prospect Jesus Luzardo, and third base prospect Sheldon Neuse.
Many people expected the Nationals to go out and trade for relief help as they have had the worst bullpen in the MLB. The bullpen has included a 5.34 earned run average. along with a .280 opponents batting average.
Sean Doolittle, a former first baseman,transformed pitcher, has put up a 3.38 earned run average. He has also put up a great .656 walks and hits per each inning pitched, along with that he has had a strikeout to walk rate of 15.5 to 1, and to go with that, he has had just below 1.5 strikeouts per inning. Doolittle is also signed through 2018 with team options for 2019 and 2020.
Ryan Madson, who can close out games, has put up a 2.06 earned run average. Along with that earned run average, he has put up a .788 walks and hits per innings pitched. He has also had a great 6.5 to 1 strikeout to walk rate. Madson has also averaged just a shade under one strikeout per each inning. He is also signed until 2018.
Jesus Luzardo, who is a starting pitcher, was drafted in the third round in the 2016 draft. In the rookie level gulf coast league, he has put up a 1.32 earned run average. Along with that he has had a 1.024 walks and hits per each inning. He has also had almost 1.1 strikeouts per inning. Along with 9.9 strikeouts per every nine innings.
Sheldon Neuse, the third base prospect and former second round pick from 2016, has put up a .273 batting average along with a .335 on-base percentage. He has also put up a .766 on base plus slugging percentage between low a and high a. Along with that he has hit ten home runs and 62 runs batted in.
Blake Treinen, the final piece who won the closer job earlier in the year, has had a down year from the past. His earned run average has been elevated to 5.73 along with his walks and hits per inning up to 1.619. His strikeout to walk rate has gone up to 2.46 to 1. He is a year off from a 2.28 earned run average and a 1.224 walks and hits per inning.
The Washington nationals who received much needed bullpen help did not part from much besides their number six and ten prospect along with a struggling reliever. The Oakland Athletics parted ways with two of their bigger trade chips but added a bullpen arm and two young low level prospects.
