On Friday Afternoon, Brian Windhorst reported that Kyrie Irving has requested a trade from the Cavs.
Since Irving wants out, here are some potential destinations for the former number one overall pick.
Los Angeles Clippers
Maybe Kyrie Irving is the perfect candidate to replace Chris Paul. When Paul led the Clippers, they never made it past the second round in the West. The trio of Irving, Griffin, and Jordan sounds deadly and if Griffin is able to stay healthy, then the Clippers could potentially challenge the Warriors in the West.
The Clippers have a few valuable assets, such as Sam Dekker, Brice Johnson, Montrezl Harrell, and a 2018 first round pick. A potential starting lineup of Irving, Rivers, Gallinari, Griffin, and Jordan would look really good in La La Land.
San Antonio Spurs
The reason why the Spurs are a possibility to land Irving is because Kyrie himself told the Cavs that the Spurs are one of the teams that he would prefer to be traded to.
The Spurs’ biggest assets are Kyle Anderson, Dejounte Murray, along with a handful of first round picks. Another reason why the Spurs could have mutual interest in Irving is because longtime point guard Tony Parker is nearing the end of his career, and Irving could do just fine replacing him.
If the Spurs could land Kyrie from Cleveland, then San Antonio’s lineup would be incredible with Irving, Green, Leonard, Aldridge, and Gasol with Rudy Gay as the sixth man.
The Suns could land Irving because of the assets they have. The Suns have 2016 top 10 picks Dragon Bender and Marquese Chriss, along with 2017 number four overall pick Josh Jackson. Not only do the Suns have young players who could be good in the future, but Phoenix also has Eric Bledsoe who could go to Cleveland.
In recent years, Bledsoe has been involved in trade rumors, and the possibility of trading him with a couple other players/picks would be great for both Cleveland and Phoenix. A backcourt of Kyrie Irving and Devin Booker would put up a ton of points and be a force out West for the coming years.
The Timberwolves could improve even more if they were even to trade for Kyrie. The return to Cleveland would have to be young players like 21 year old Tyus Jones, 20 year old first round pick Justin Patton, and future picks.
The Timberwolves have already gotten astronomically better this offseason by trading for Jimmy Butler and signing Jeff Teague, so trading for Irving would be the icing on the cake. If Irving heads to Minnesota, they’re starting five would be Irving, Butler, Wiggins, Dieng, and Towns.
Could Kyrie be the next to take his talents to South Beach? Its possible, but it would all depend on the Heat’s willingness to part ways with young players like Justise Winslow, Josh Richardson, and Bam Adebayo. Miami is a very appealing situation for Irving because of playing with Hassan Whiteside and Dion Waiters.
It will be very interesting to see where Irving ends up, or if he stays in Cleveland. However, all signs are pointing towards Irving being moved before the season starts.
