Liverpool has signed Andrew Robertson from Hull City for a fee of £8 million rising to £10 million with add-ons. With players like Michael Keane and Jordan Pickford going for over £25 million, £8 million for a player like Robertson is an absolute bargain. Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool fans will hope that Robertson will solve Liverpool’s left back problems.
Liverpool’s left backs last season were James Milner and Alberto Moreno. James Milner is a midfielder and Jurgen Klopp should not rely on him to play left back for Liverpool. As for Moreno, he is terrible at defending and should be a winger.
Robertson’s most impressive stat from last season is his 0 defensive errors. Last season, Liverpool had the 6th most defensive errors with 18 and the 3rd most errors leading to a goal with 9. Robertson should provide Liverpool with much needed defensive help next season.
Robertson had more interceptions, more blocks, and committed 20 less fouls than James Milner while playing 3 less games. Robertson is also a good player going forward as well. He had a 76% pass completion and he created 19 chances which leads all Hull City defenders. However, Robertson isn’t a guaranteed starter and he will still have to compete with Milner for the starting job. Even if Robertson doesn’t become the starting left back next year, he is still a young player with lots of potential.
Despite all of that, many Liverpool fans are not impressed by the signing. Some fans say that Liverpool shouldn’t sign players from relegated teams. Liverpool’s signing of Georginio Wijnaldum last season proves that players from relegated teams can have a big impact on a big club like Liverpool.
Liverpool fans also say that Liverpool should’ve signed a bigger name left back from other big leagues in Europe. Three years ago, Liverpool signed Alberto Moreno from Sevilla over Ryan Bertrand. That signing shows that the expensive bigger name player isn’t always better than cheap Premier League players. Liverpool fans should keep an open mind about Andrew Robertson, because he is a young Premier League proven player with a lot of potential.
